Azurik was inducted into the order of the Lore Guardians following the death of his mother, Nayfa. As one of the most learned of the ten Guardians, she ranked only just below Prime Guardian Eldwyn. During her yearly pilgrimage to the Periphery to seek enlightenment near the Elemental Realms, she disappeared.
Until that time, Azurik had intended to become a craftsman. He had learned the ancient script at his mother's insistence, but he had always believed her studies to be tedious. Now he had a different view. He petitioned Eldwyn for entrance to the order, but was refused. Eldwyn feared that the boy's loss would cloud his ability to focus purely on the contemplation of the Ancients, and Azurik was older than the preferred initiate.
Undaunted, Azurik took his mother's works and painstakingly recreated her final agenda. He set off for the Periphery without even a stone to defend himself, but in the course of three treacherous days he managed to trace his mother's footsteps. There was no mark upon her body to indicate the manner of her death. Using her Lore Guardian's staff, Azurik incinerated her body, freeing her spirit through the purity of the Element. He had seen his father's body burned in the same manner when he was very young. Returning to the colony, staff in hand, he was promptly admitted as an Apprentice Lore Guardian.
Several years later, Azurik is now an apprentice to Eldwyn. As an orphan, Azurik looks more to Eldwyn as a father figure than solely as a mentor. During his apprenticeship, Azurik has learned about Perathia's history, what is known of the Ancients, and ancient artifacts.
Azurik is a bright pupil and a quick learner. It is important to recall in the face of Azurik's formidable fighting prowess that he is first and foremost an archaeologist of sorts. The Lore Guardians are not a fighting force, but train to fight based on the dangers they encounter when exploring the periphery of the colony near to the Realms, searching for artifacts and new insights about Diluvian culture.
Azurik enjoys studying the artifacts left by the ancient Diluvians, and has proven himself to be adept at making leaps of logic that lead him to correct conclusions. Azurik is physically fit and capable of running long distances, swimming, jumping far and high as well as fighting with his staff. Based on his mix of physical capability, intellect, and hunger for knowledge, Azurik might be thought of as a blue version of Young Indiana Jones.
In the beginning of the game, Eldwyn is mortally wounded at the hands of Balthazar. This is a terrible blow to Azurik, but it catapults him into the role of a full-fledged Lore Guardian, strengthening his resolve to save his people from Balthazar, the Guardian of Death, and the destruction of his world.
